Introducing Workforce Customizer

Workforce Customizer is the space where you tailor the occupations in your workforce data so they accurately reflect how work happens in your organization.

After your job titles have been mapped to Pearson’s occupation ontology — which includes standardized tasks and their associated technology impacts — Workforce Customizer gives you the flexibility to adjust those details to match your real-world roles.

Every organization uses roles differently. Task responsibilities vary, time spent on activities shifts from team to team, and some work simply doesn’t appear in a standardized occupation profile. Workforce Customizer bridges that gap by letting you refine an occupation so the insights you receive are truly representative of how your teams operate day-to-day.

What you can do with Workforce Customizer

Review mapped occupations

You’ll begin by viewing all the occupations your job titles were mapped to. This helps you understand how each role in your workforce aligns with the ontology and where customizations may be needed.

Explore occupation details

Before customizing, you can review the full occupation profile — including its description, common role names, and the complete set of tasks with their default time allocations. This provides a strong baseline for comparison against your organization’s expectations.

Customize task lists

Workforce Customizer allows you to refine tasks so the occupation better reflects your internal reality. You can:

  • Add tasks that your teams regularly perform

  • Remove tasks that don’t apply in your context

  • Adjust task time allocations to represent how hours are actually spent

This ensures each customized occupation reflects both the scope of work and the distribution of effort you expect in practice.

Search and add tasks from across the ontology

When adding tasks, you can search across all occupations in the ontology or filter by job family, technology, or keywords. This makes it easy to find tasks that are relevant to hybrid or unique roles in your workforce.

Save as a custom occupation

Once you’re satisfied with the adjustments, you can save your changes as a custom occupation. This allows you to:

  • Preserve the original ontology occupation

  • Apply your customized version to specific job titles

  • Maintain a clear distinction between standard and organization-specific role definitions

Why Workforce Customizer matters

Workforce Customizer brings flexibility to a standardized system. By aligning occupations to your organization’s actual work patterns, you’ll generate insights that are more accurate and more meaningful for workforce planning, technology impact assessments, role redesign, and skill development strategies.

It becomes the foundation for a workforce model that is both evidence-based and tailored — combining the strength of Pearson’s ontology with the realities of your unique roles.
